The Cannibals were a mid-Victorian Club, whose members included many eminent anthropologists, lawyers and writers. Richard Burton, A. C. Swinburne, and Richard Monckton Milnes were all members. They 'consumed pornography and erotica with a passion, (not) as a project of liberation, but as personal and private, a function of social and educational superiority.[1]
